Overview
As an alternative to the classic ascent via Alpe Rulé, this variant starts from the Ciriè Refuge, crosses Pian Ciamarella, and follows a panoramic balcony trail offering views of Pian della Mussa and the surrounding peaks. Upon reaching Lake Ru, which only reveals itself after passing through a rocky section, it is possible to continue uphill on the eastern slope to view Lake Mercurin from above, located at the foot of Uja di Mondorne.

DirectionsHaving reached the Ciriè Refuge via the paved road, take the path on the right (the signposts are located at a dirt clearing) leading to Pian Ciamarella (2,100 m).
Upon reaching the start of the plateau, turn right near some signposts and cross the meadow (faint trail markings), heading east towards a small rocky outcrop; once you reach its base, the path climbs again until it reaches the ridge of this small promontory.
After a short downhill section, the route continues across wide pastures, alternating between uphill stretches and pleasant panoramic level traverses, until reaching the junction for Alpe Rulé; pass this, and immediately after, the Alpe della Rossa (2,230 m).
From the mountain pasture, the track continues east, crossing a scree slope and passing over a rather smooth and exposed rock face (use caution). You then enter a wild little valley, ascending through the center to reach its eastern ridge.
Continuing across wide grassy slopes, you reach the basin where the lake is located, dominated by Uja di Mondorne. This leads to a large basin characterized by reddish rocks; ascend northwards, passing through sections of large boulders just before finally reaching the lake.
From the lake, there is the possibility to continue the ascent along the eastern ridge, following cairns over scree, until reaching the summit which offers an excellent view of Lake Mercurin (2,499 m) below.
