Overview
Pleasant itinerary following a section of the Val Grande Balcony Trail, offering spectacular panoramas of the imposing peaks on the French border. The route also crosses the characteristic alpine hamlet of Rivotti and passes numerous Alpine Pastures, before returning to the starting point along the Stura, following the Nature Trail.
Starting point
DirectionsThe route begins from the provincial road, taking Via San Lorenzo, beside a small church. Enter the chintane, the narrow alleyways of the Pialpetta hamlet, following signs for the Sentiero Italia/GTA and some white-red trail markers, until reaching the paved road leading to the Alboni and Rivotti hamlets.
The trail cuts across the road at several points, also following it briefly at a hairpin bend. Continue to the Casa Alpina di Leinì, which you circumnavigate along the perimeter on the right, then re-enter the woods and reach Località Airetta, where the trail cuts between the Baite Beinasco.
Continuing uphill, reach the cart track leading to Baita dell’Amicizia; pass it on the right and continue until meeting the paved road again, which you follow downhill for a few meters until encountering the trail on the right again, leading to the church of Madonna della Visitazione, in Frazione Rivotti (1450 m).
Keeping the church on your left, continue along the grassy track that intersects the paved road. Then take the cart track and take the turn-off encountered near the first hairpin bend.
The trail crosses a group of houses and continues along the cart track uphill until meeting on the left, just beyond the hairpin bend, the turn-off leading directly to the Balcony Trail track.
Follow the dirt road westward for several kilometers, until reaching on the left the turn-off for Alpine Pasture Crest – Groscavallo. Continue the descent toward Alpine Pasture del Piano (1731 m); pass between the buildings and follow the trail trace entering the woods.
Cross the Rio Sagnasse (pay attention to the stream flow) and continue the descent until reaching the provincial road, which you follow to the left for a short stretch, then take on the right the Nature Trail, which continues beyond the bridge over the Stura. Upon reaching Pialpetta, cross the Stura again at the Camper Area.
