THE GRATA FOOTPATH

cappella della grata

This route, easy and short, is very interesting because it touches three religious buildings of considerable interest.
It is suitable for a pleasant family walk and it passes initially through the territory of Coassolo and only in the last stretch in the territory of Monastero.
The walk starts in the square in front of the parish church of Coassolo: San Nicolao, dating back to the sixteenth century but with numerous interventions from the Baroque period. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicolas of Bari, the protector of the village and whom the local people affectionately call “Nicolau”. Continuing along the way we meet the Chapel of the “Grata”. It is said that in ancient times a small shrine stood on the cliff, immersed in the dense forest, with the image of the Blessed Virgin, in front of which a small light was perpetually burning. Beside it passed and still passes the steep path that connects Coassolo with Monastero. Many people passed along this path but it was full of danger: wild animals came down from the mountains or there was the possibility of meeting criminals. The traveller who came here, addressed a prayer to Our Lady to help him reach his destination safe and sound and infuse him with calm and courage.
Subsequently popular devotion replaced the simple shrine with a chapel, which we also find cited on the occasion of a pastoral visit by the Archbishop Carlo Broglia on June 26 1594. The chapel is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary but is commonly referred to as “La Grata”.
At the end of the walk we meet the “Capela ‘D San Bastian”, a characteristic rural chapel of which we find mention in a protocol of 1522: In that time the Saint Sebastian festival was held there on January 20th, now Saint James is commemorated at the end of July. Inside there are some frescoes and a banner for the procession, depicting Saint Sebastian, as well as votive paintings.
